EARLY YEARS IN KENYA
MOVE TO THE STATES
WITH MILELE
CAROL'S CURRENT WORK

EARLY YEARS IN KENYA

Born the middle child (of 5) to Ben and Rachel Ongera in Nairobi, Kenya, singer-songwriter Carol Asali began singing at her home church, Maxwell SDA, at a very young age.  “I remember feeling that God has given me this gift to sing but I didn’t know what to do with it.  Growing up in Kenya, the focus was always on education not on the arts (although that’s changed now!), so I didn’t have many examples of people that turned a passion for music into something that could sustain them.” Fortunately for Carol, a friend in Nairobi was performing in musicals in the Kenya National Theatre and he encouraged her to audition for a national production of the musical Tobias and the Angel.  After auditioning, Carol was selected for a large part.  “The first time I saw my name in print in connection with this musical, I was so excited and I was determined to figure out how to do this for a living.”

MOVE TO THE STATES
First, Carol wanted to get her college degree so she left Kenya for the U.S. where she attended college pursuing a degree in accounting.  Although she did very well in her accounting classes, she still knew that music was her love and she continued to pursue opportunities to explore her gift.  She went back to the foundation she knew best, the church, and was accepted as part of the worship team at her new home church Salt & Light in Houston.

WITH MILELE
In 2000, Ms. Asali transferred to California to finish her accounting degree and it was here that she re-connected with that same childhood friend from Kenya that had encouraged her to get involved in musical productions.  Her friend, Christian Mungai, was a founding member of the musical group Milele, a highly successful group that had played for packed stadiums in Kenya.  Milele was now based in the U.S. and the all-male group was looking to add a female sound to their mix.  They loved Carol’s voice and she quickly became an integral part of the band.  After successfully playing their popular songs for many years, the group’s vision changed to a focus on social justice issues and they began to incorporate a message in their music.  They had developed a passion for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS and they spoke to audiences worldwide about this passion and used their music as a means to relate their message to others.  This new vision was perfect for Carol Asali as it connected her love for music with her heart for underprivileged children.

As her musical talents became known in the States, Carol began collaborating with other artists that wanted to utilize her powerful vocals.  Carol worked with artists in a variety of genres including soul, R&B, rock, world music, blues, reggae, and many others.

CAROL'S CURRENT WORK
Carol Asali is now married (in September 2009)to her real estate developer husband, Kris Wilhelm, who also serves as Carol's manager and biggest fan.  Currently, Ms. Asali can be seen performing throughout Southern California with the band Casual Manner led by guitarist and songwriter Roy Schenkenberger and also with the female singing group Three Shades, a popular trio performing in clubs and other venues.  Carol also can be heard singing at several churches in Southern California where she helps lead worship services.  In all of Carol’s music she is anchored in knowing that it is God who has given her the gift to sing and she shares it with that understanding.

It is as a solo artist that Carol Asali’s musical expression takes its full form.  Her own music is a unique mix of neo-soul, African rhythms and American roots rock.  Ranging from hauntingly soulful ballads to edgy, rock-beat frolics, Carol’s sound breaks through the boundary of any traditional category.  Her deeply felt lyrics address social issues and explore the theme of personal growth through hardship.

Ms. Asali's first solo work, her new CD entitled “Journey”, is now available for purchase on CDBaby and ITunes.  Carol debuted "Journey" on January 27th, 2012 at her album release concert at the R.O.C.K. at Mt. of Olives in Mission Viejo, CA (www.rocktheoc.com).  If you missed the event, keep checking the website as we'll post concert video and pictures.

The CD includes her popular singles “Run Away”, and “Forgotten”.  In assembling "Journey", Carol worked with several highly talented producers including Russell Crain, Colin Boyd, Kaima Mwiti, Benji Bendrix, and Mike Zirbes.
